 Leadership

Leadership refers to the quality of leading people. Without good leadership, no country or organization can succeed.  Good leaders are able to singlehandedly chart new direction in their respective fields. Leadership is the essence of good governance.

The world has seen many great leaders. They have influenced our lives in every sphere. A good leader should have many good qualities. First and foremost, a leader must have a clear vision of what he or she would like to achieve and inspire others to achieve it. They must work hard with total commitment for making it a reality. They should have a firm belief in themselves and their people.   A leader should be ready to give to others rather than expect others to give to him. He should be equipped to manage changes. A leader should have nobility of heart. He should have clear thinking and the capacity to be a facilitator.

A true leader needs to be passionate, with the ability to travel on uncharted territory and courage to take effective decisions. India had seen many great leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, S Radhakrishnan , Mother Teresa, APJ Abdul Kalam etc. They all had won our hearts with their leadership qualities.

For success in all missions, it is essential to have creative leaders. Creative leadership involves exercising the vision to change the traditional role from the commander to the coach, manager to mentor, from director to delegator and from one who demands respect to one who facilitates self-respect. We must inculcate the virtue of leadership early in our lives, so as to imbibe and become leaders, in our respective field.

Write short answers

1.     The heart lies in the chest, between the lungs, and is tilted a little to the left. It is protected by the backbone at the back, the chest bone in front and the ribs on the sides.

2.     The heart is divided into four parts called chambers. The upper two chambers are called atria and the lower two are called ventricles.

3.     The four chambers of the heart are separated by thick walls so that blood cannot flow freely inside the heart. It can flow only through gates called valves in the walls. These valves are like one way doors that allow blood to flow only in one direction, from the atria to the ventricles.

4.     Arteries: Arteries are blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart to different parts of the body. Arteries lie deeper than veins, so we cannot see them.

Veins: Veins are blood vessels that carry blood to the heart from different parts of the body. Veins lie closer to the skin and appear as bluish green lines.

 Explain briefly.

1.     The main function of the blood is to carry things around the body. It carries,

·        Digested food from the small intestine to different parts of the body.

·        Oxygen from the lungs to different parts of the body.

·        Waste from different parts of the body to the kidneys.

·        Carbon dioxide from different parts of the body to the lungs.

·        White blood cells, which are a part of blood, to fight germs in different parts of the body.

2.     The circulation of blood from the heart to the lungs and back again is occurring in the following ways.

·        Deoxygenated blood from the top part of the body enters into the right atrium through superior vena cava and the lower part of the body enters into the right atrium through the inferior vena cava.

·        When the heart relaxes, blood flows from the right atrium into the right ventricle.

·        When the heart contracts, the right ventricle pushes blood into the artery that carries blood to the lungs.

·        In the lungs, blood loses carbon dioxide and picks up oxygen.

·        Oxygenated blood returns to the left atrium through veins from the lungs and then flows into the left ventricle when the heart relaxes.

3.     The circulation of blood from the heart to the body and back again is occurring in the following ways.

·        It is pushed into the aorta from the left ventricle when the heart contracts.

·        The aorta and its branches carry oxygenated blood to different parts of the body and the above process keeps on going.

4.     One complete cycle of the heart contracting and relaxing is called a heartbeat. Every time the heart beats, the arteries beat too. When the heart pushes the blood into the arteries, they expand and then relax. This is called the pulse. Since the arteries throb with each heartbeat, checking the pulse is a way of knowing how fast or slow the heart is beating.

5.     What are the measures to keep the heart healthy?

·        Eat healthy food.

·        Avoid junk food as it contains a lot of fat. Excess fat is not good for health.

·        Exercise or play regularly.

·        Overweight causes heart problems, so take care of the body weight.

·        Keep your teeth and gums healthy. Teeth problems can lead to heart problems.

·        Have a good sleep.

6.     Write a note on arteries.

Arteries: Arteries are blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart to different parts of the body. Arteries lie deeper than veins, so we cannot see them. The main artery through which blood leaves from the heart is called aorta. It is the biggest artery in the body. It branches into smaller arteries that carry blood to different parts of the body. Another important artery is the one that carries blood from the heart to the lungs. It has two main branches.

7.     Draw the diagram of circulatory system and show how blood circulates in the body. (page no:8 , right bottom corner diagram) and do the labelling.
